Mine is 20k miles and I believe those are still the first set since came out of factory - I got it with 11k miles on the clock.
My riding style is rather modest and 75% of my riding is done on motorway - I guess those factors are the reason for the long lasting pads plus I suspect those factory pads are not as "effective" as aftermarket sintered ones.
Well, maybe I got a rock in there or something....but I know they put "squeelers" in there that let you know when it's time to change the pads....maybe I'll play with it this weekend and see what I can find.
if I remember right, ak guy, you have a tmax. I don't know about a tmax, but I do know that the majesty front brake pad thickness is 6mm with a minimum thickness of 0.8mm. the back pad thickness is 8.3mm with a minimum thickness of 0.8mm. that's pad thickness not including the backing plate. the rotor thickness front and rear is 5mm with a minimum thickness of 4.5mm and a maximum deflection of 0.15mm. I imagine your bike will be close to that.
I do "urban riding" a lot, but the speeds are slow, and I leave a lot of distance between me and the vehicle in front. So I let the engine braking do most of the work.
I'm a large heavy rider and tow a trailer in the mountains on occasion and most of my riding is rural - suburban. I just changed the brake pads on my TMAX at 20,000 miles. The wear indicator slots on the face of the pads were still there but very shallow. I probably had another 5-10 thousand miles. I already had them out so decided to replace them, mainly because I didn't want to have to do it in the middle of the riding season. I really don't want to know how much new rotors cost simply because I let the pads go metal to metal either.
Thanks. I went ahead and ordered the brakes. Hopefully I will get something I can use (;
Ordered two sets for the front and two for the back. I know the front takes two sets and the back takes one, but I just figured I would buy all they had, and that's what they had (;
Well, I was riding slowly last night and I heard some noise I didn't like when I put the brakes on - so today I decided to have a look. I got the front and the rear brake pads off. Attached are pictures of the pads.
I'm thinking they ALL need to be replaced - at 10,665 miles.
New pads are in the mail...supposed to arrive by Wednesday. Scooter is out of commission until I can get them and put them on.
The brake pads should wear more nearly evenly than that. It looks like only one side of the callipers are squeezing the pads to the disks. It looks like you need to check out, clean, and maybe rebuild the front callipers, and the back calliper mount needs a clean and lube job, and perhaps rebuild the caliper too.
Well, it was a challenge for me, but I think I got the job done correctly. I took it for a test drive, it seemed to work OK. So I am ready to go fahrt in the woods this weekend!
Be sure to spray/flush out the brakes, and around the pivot point for the trailing arm on the side with the silent chain. Also spray the radiator, and as much of the engine that you can reach. Be sure to get the side stand, center stand, and the rear shock. Keep the salt off the chrome on the front suspension tubes too. The salt will do a number on the aluminum and steel parts.
Now...if I only knew what the "pivot point", "trailing arm" and "silent chain" were.....not everyone is a mechanical type

The silent chain case is what the rear brake is mounted on. The front end of the case pivots around the output shaft on the LH rear end of the engine, and there is a big bearing and seal there that needs to be kept clean and free of dirt and road salt.
Don't push the braking too hard, until the new pads have bedded-in. Then, you'll be AMAZED at how you can stop! :shock:
