They need to improve the mpg to keep up with something like the Honda DCT engine, there are die hard TMax fans that will just buy no matter what but I switched from my TMax (64-mpg avg) to a Honda NC750x (88+mpg avg). That enough difference to save me a couple of in fuel each year, or the cost of parts for servicing it myself with some left in my pocket.
Not everyone wants the heft of the NC750, it's a lot of overkill, and for a lot of people very uncomfortable. If all you are looking for is fuel mileage, ride a 50cc Ruckus.
