I had something similar to that happen with my new 2008 Burgman 400. In the 49,000 miles I had the 2007, I never had a lick of trouble starting it. So when I get to the Costco gas station with the new one, I just shut the engine off while waiting in line. No problem, right? Well, I went to start it, and nothing. The gauges all worked, but I didn't even get a click. I cycled through the kickstand and the master shutoff switch on the handlebar a few times...then it started.

This happened to me three times. I have no clue what was the cause other than I think one of those two switches was stuck in a position that stopped it from working. After those three times, I've ridden a couple thousand miles and there's been no problems, so I'm thinking that simply by using the bike, whatever corrosion or dirt that was in the switch has been cleaned off.

You might want to look at the switches. I'd start with the kickstand switch since it is the easiest to get gunked up with road debris.
